Pitches and Hot-air balloons....

11/26/2015

We are working hard to develop our speaking skills and have been trying to present to the class or our partners at the end of each unit. This week, the students have been applying what they have learnt over the course of this unit.

First, they each had to present a 1 minute pitch to the class. They had to tell us about their idea for a good or service that would improve ISS and persuade us to invest in it.

Next, they were given a character to represent in a hot-air balloon. They then had to justify why they deserved a place in the balloon, using all the persuasive language we have been looking at.

Persuasive Sentence Starters and Connectives

11/15/2015

  • This week  we have been thinking about the way we start sentences and how we can make them longer by adding reasons or extra details. By doing this our sentences become stronger and more persuasive.

What we did:
The students chose which Sentence Starters to use. They wrote their sentence and then used Connectives (words that join two sentences) to add their reasons. Some even applied what we learnt about strong adjectives.

Here are some that they came up with:
  • I believe that this cake is the best cake on the planet because it is crunchy and nice so people will come to our store. (Max)
  • In my opinion, I want my friends to play a different game because this game is very boring and not fun. (Ian)
  • I agree that you can go to the movie with your friend but not now because we are playing a game now. (Toma)
  • In truth, a lot of animals are not feeling well in the cages of the zoos because I think the animals can't run or hunt so their power will become weaker. Also, they want to run around in the jungle or forest with their families. (Azusa)
  • I believe that this cake is most delicious because my son made this cake. (Yutaro)
  • I believe that this cake will make people feel happy because we use the freshest fruit to make this cake. (Hina)
  • It has to be time that we can out with my friend because I am grown enough to go out alone with my friends and the most important thing is I also have to know the route. (Yeonbi)
  • I really feel that my cake has such beautiful decoration and is delicious because I use the world's best milk and flour. (Xian Hang)
  • You can give some free cake to the people and the people will think it is yummy. (Stephen)
  • The cake is tasty so you should try it. (Koei)
  • I think that two-square, four-square is the best game so we should play it. (Koharu)

Some of our students from 5.2 participated in their class assembly today. They shared their learning about Fair Trade through presentations and dramas.

All spoke loudly and clearly in front of the school. Well done, Max, Yeonbi, Koharu, Koei and Yutaro!

Grade 5 Market Day

The students did a great job making and selling their goods or running their games and manicure services.

They showed lots of enthusiasm and  confidence when talking to their customers and persuading them to buy. The groups also co-operated well to try and make their businesses a success.

Market Day was a great opportunity for them to develop their skills as a communicator and a risk-taker.

Well done, Grade 5!

We have been investigating the features of adverts and persuasive writing.

One feature that we spent time inquiring into was the use of strong descriptive words. The students identified and found many different adjectives (describing words) and then explored how these change to make them stronger or more powerful. These are known as adjectives----> comparatives----> superlatives.

For example: small --->       smaller---->             smallest
                           tasty--->        tastier------>           tastiest
                           big------>       bigger------->           biggest
                           exciting--->  more exciting----->most exciting
                           good------>   better---------->       best

The students grouped the words to try and come up with patterns or rules to help them remember how different words change.
