In order to be able to write an authentic personal recount, the G4s played two non-competitive games, People to People and The Chief, in the MPR.
Once the games were over, the students went back to their ESL classroom and talked about the events. Later they reviewed how a recount is structured, what type of language is used and how to move the story along using time connective words.
The students put their personal data onto the Master list. In pairs they are using the data to graph the information in order to see more explictly the "character" of the G4 class. Later they will present their findings to the larger class. Even though this is not what normally is taught in an ESL class, Math has a unique vocabulary that students need to learn as well.
The students brought in "Me Boxes" which contained things that were special to them to share with their classmates. Afterwards they did a self reflection on how they thought they had done. This activity is all about presenting and viewing. The presenter has a particular job to to whilst sharing and the audience as well has a job whilst watching. Both are skills that are developed throughout the year.
The students drew an image of themselves and put 4 facts around it. Their partner had to guess what the facts meant. For instance on mine I had put 0. It meant that I have no brothers and sisters. The example below is Ms. Su's.
Below is the survey that each student did with a partner. Next they will put all the information on a master sheet and see where the similarities and differences are.
The Grade 4 did different activities on the first day to get to know each other such as where they come from, what languages they speak and how old they are. They did an ABC order activity and then had had the class guess more facts about them as well. In the picture, the students had put their names into ABC order. They worked together to put everyone's name into proper order.
For this lat unit, the Grade 4s were working on biographies of significant people from their own countries that had an impact on them. Some examples were a Japanese astronaut, singer, and tennis player, a Korean gymnast and doctor, a Chinese martial arts expert, the first American president and a Norwegian princess to name a few.
We also up dated our second semester goals with all students writing that they had improved in different areas of their English.
Having had discussions about what to do as an end of year project, we have decided to link the work on biographies that the students are doing in their homeroom classes to the ESL class work. The dfference is that they are to do a biography about someone from their own country.
In order to gather information, the students need to be able to formulate quesitons so . they can find specific information. Therefore, we have been practicing making and anwering questions for the last few periods.
Linking to their Unit of Inquiry, the students will write a biography about someone that is considered signifigant in their own countires. It could be in the realm of sports, art, science etc. They wil also have to explain why this person is of importance to them.
The students will present their biographies to their classmates using either a Prezi, Google Slideshow or poster.
The Grade 4 will be asked to think of a way to present what they have learned throughout the year. It can be in any form but it should include the 4 strands of language (reading, writing listening and speaking, presenting and viewing), Should be interesting!
