To end Unit 1, "Spoken Words connect us with others", I sent out a Google form with questions for the students to give feedback. Responses to follow.
In Grade 4:
WALT (we are learning to) be independent learners. TIB (this is because) it helps us to be successful in whatever we do. WILF (What I am looking for) In order to improve their understanding of past tense verbs, one group played a game with Ms Su. As they moved around the board they had to identify even and odd numbers and accordingly, gave the past tense equivalent to it's present tense form or made a sentence using a past tense word.
Students in this group are either at the drafting, editing or revising stage of their personal recount using a a template that was sent to them on Google docs. Today we discussed what the criteria was for a good personal recount using a rubric and in addition, my own personal recount as an example of a Mentor text or what I am looking for (WILF)
One group finished up a draft version of their goals for Semester 1 today. Part of their goal setting was to name what profile they are and what profile they would like to improve. In order to help students understand more deeply the meaning of each profile word different translations in various mother tongues are available.
One group of G4s reviewed past and present tense and in addition, practiced using the 5Ws + 1 question words to make a good introduction in preparation for their own personal recount.
A small group of G4 students started the goal setting process by brainstorming what they are learning in their ESL class. Afterwards, they created a colourful mind map which will help them to identify areas that are strengths and others that are needing to be improved.
The students were either with a partner or in a small group to reconstruct a recount (story) by using communication skills and the attitude of cooperation to complete the task in a correct and timely manner.
