An important part of this programme is called "Read to Self". This is when a student chooses to read independently and also chooses which book to read.
To enable them to do this and maintain their reading for longer periods of time, it is crucial that all students and particularly ESL children are able to pick the right book for them. This is known as a "good fit" book.
They will have a selection of books, magazines or graphic novels in their folders to choose from. These can include: books in English that they are able to read and understand; non-fiction books or books with a higher level of English that also have pictures that they are able to use and "read" to support their understanding and books in their own language.
In their classrooms and in the library, students have been investigating what a "good fit" is for them.
We use the IPICK as a guide to how to choose a book. The aim is to foster and develop a love of and an ability to read (in any language) independently for longer periods of time. This will enhance their vocabulary and their understanding of the world and is a valuable life-long skill.
Please encourage your children to choose books that they are interested in and talk with them about what they are reading.
